Sidney Crosby's First NHL Fight Gets Him A Gordie Howe Hat Trick
Thursday December 20, 2007
During his third NHL season and 194th NHL career game, Sidney Crosby dropped the gloves for his first NHL fight against Andrew Ferrence of The Boston Bruins. Just 25 minutes into the hockey game, during the second period, Sidney Crosby fought for the first time and earned his first ever Gordie Howe hat trick.
A Gordie Howe hat trick occurs when a hockey player, Sidney Crosby in this case, earns a goal, an assist, and has a fight, all during a single game. During the first period of the game against The Boston Bruins Sidney Crosby assisted on both first period goals by Evgeni Malkin. Crosby also scored a goal of his own. Then just over five minutes into the second period Sidney Crosby had his first NHL fight to secure the Gordie Howe hat trick. The Penguins defeated the Bruins 5-4 in a shootout victory.
Sidney Crosby's first fight started when Andrew Ferrence checked Crosby into the boards, followed by a punch to the face. An angry Sidney Crosby immediately dropped the gloves socking Ferrence good directly to the head. Both Sidney Crosby and Andrew Ferrence received 5 minute fightin major penalties and Ferrence was given an additional 2 minutes for roughing. Sid Vicious drew blood as can been seen on Ferrence's bloody head in the video of the fight below.
Apparently Sidney Crosby fights a lot better than Wayne Gretzky did. In fact, Eric McErlain from AOL fanhouse said, "Bravo to Crosby, who has already bested Wayne Gretzky's rather poor record with the gloves off. " He went on to point out these two videos of Gretzky fights...
In all this was a exciting moment for NHL fans seeing Sidney Crosby earn his first Gordie Howe hat trick and first fight.
