Sidney Crosby, his Penguins, and Toronto's Maple Leafs played an exciting hockey game to the delight of 19,479 hockey fans at the Air Canada Centre in a game that featured an abundance of goals, many chances, and very little defense.
Sidney Crosby scored the game winning goal on the power play, with 5:22 left in the third period, when team mate Darryl Sydor shot the puck that was stopped by Toronto goalie Vesa Toskala but slipped right to Crosby who banged it into an empty net.
During the second period Sidney Crosby came close to his first fighting major in the NHL when he got into it with Toronto’s Nik Antropov, both ended up with roughing penalties. USA Today's website reported Sidney Crosby as saying:
"I went to finish my hit and he got his stick up a bit, a little bit of a scrum. Nothing major. That's not a fight. I didn't drop the gloves.''
The Penguins have now played 4 games so far and are potential Stanley Cup favorites this year. The Penguins had some fans panicking in their previous 3 games in which Crosby had not scored any goals. Along with the 2 goals he scored tonight, Crosby earned 2 assists since the beginning of this season. Sidney Crosby recorded his first point of the season, on an assist in a game against Anaheim on October 6. This has been the slowest start to an NHL season for Crosby and this is what USA Today reported he said after the hockey game tonight:
"I remember last year I went eight to 10 games without a goal, so I was hoping it wasn't going to be that long, but that happens, that's part of playing hockey. The seasons are full of ups and downs. You just have to battle through it."
Knowing how well Sidney Crosby has played hockey in the past and that he has broken the ice on scoring this season, fans can hold off on panicking for now and relax. Crosby’s next game is on Wednesday Oct. 17 when the Penguins host the New Jersey Devils.
Hockey Fans at the Air Canada Centre not only got to see Sidney Crosby but also, famous actor / comedian and Toronto native, Mike Myers as he dropped the puck for the ceremonial faceoff. Mike Myers is well known for movies such as Austin Power’s and Wayne’s World, and is in Toronto shooting his latest comedy film “The Love Guru”. In the movie Myers’ character is born in America but raised in India then returns to the U.S. as a self help / love guru. Part of the movie involves Myers helping the “Toronto Maple Laughs” win the Stanley Cup. Now that is truly funny considering The Leafs’ 40 year Stanley Cup drought and their poor results the last few years.
